Barbara
Kruger
(born 1945 , Newark, New Jersey, USA)
American conceptual artist whose billboard-style photo-montages subvert
mass media representations of interpersonal authority. Kruger typically
appropriates photographic images of women, blows them up so the half-tone
dots are visible, crops them and tattoos them with feminist slogans, eg
ÒYour gaze hits the side of my faceÓ, set in crude newspaper type. Her
work has been successful since the 1970s.
